December 22 saw a friendly online rapid chess tournament held between junior chess teams of South Ossetia and Nicaragua.
The South Ossetian Foreign Ministry was initiator of the online tournament, which was organized at the premises of the Russian House in Tskhinval.
Head of the Chess Federation of South Ossetia Georgy Shavlokhov and Director for Chess Program of the Ministry of Education of Nicaragua Pamela Alarcon participated in the event while representing chess federations of the parties.
Before the tournament start Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia Zarina Kochieva congratulated the players on the participation in such a unique event, having expressed confidence that the championship would be held in a friendly atmosphere and wished everyone an interesting game.
Pamela Alarcon welcomed the participants of the tournament on behalf of the Government of Nicaragua and President Daniel Ortega, having emphasized that chess unites and erases any boundaries, being a manifestation of friendship, intercultural ties and diplomacy of the two states.
The friendly tournament was won by the team of Nicaragua.
Representatives of South Ossetia and Nicargua supported the idea of conducting similar championships in future.
